RE-CONDITIONING/SERVICE INFORMATION:

A prime example of Goldentone’s quality hand-wired build, all original.

The valve complement here consists of:
  • · 4 x Miniwatt 12AX7
  • · 1 x Miniwatt 6GW8
  • · 2 x AWV Radiotron 6DQ6A* output valves.
These valves are all made in Australia, all original, in good condition and all testing within tolerance. 6DQ6A valves are very robust – they were designed for use in CRT television sets that used much higher voltages than guitar amps. These valves should last!

Transformers are all Australian-made A&Rs
  • 1. A&R Type 2454 power transformer
  • 2. A&R Type 2700 output transformer (this transformer has been professionally re-wound to its vintage specifications at some point)
  • 3. Rola TV301 choke, dated 24 July 1963
  • 4. Rola LRH3 reverb transformer, dated 27 May 1963
The reverb tank is a Gibbs (Hammond) unit, made in the USA in March 1963.

Like many early Goldentone amps, this 1755 has no serial number, however the dates on the hardware reliably date the amp to 1963,
Speakers are the original Plessey 12PEG 15W, both are in excellent working order and appear to have been reconditioned at some point.  With the Type 2700 output transformer, the total speaker load must be 8W.
The 1755 has two channels: normal (volume, bass and treble), and echo-tremolo with volume, bass, treble and tremolo speed. The tremolo speed control also includes the mains power on/off switch. The separate “echo-volume” control is the reverb level for the echo-tremolo channel.
The tremolo is a preamp bias ‘wiggle’ type, similar to early Supro and Gretsch amps. Tremolo intensity is preset within the amp’s circuit, and tremolo can be switched on/off via a footswitch. A new footswitch has been wired and is included with this amp.

All electrolytic caps, including the dual cans, at sixty years old, were well past their expected lifespan, and have all been replaced.
The original coupling capacitors for the power valves also were showing slight DC leakage, which, in this position, can place the output valves (and OT) at risk. These have been replaced with TAD “mustard” caps.
This highly collectible amp is one of the most sought-after Goldentones.  Its design is more efficient and has a little more gain than some other models.  Many enthusiasts consider the 1755 to be the ‘classic’ Goldentone combo.  It is outputting approx. 33 watts RMS before notable clipping.  (The Rose Morris Catalogue listed the 1755 as a 40 watt amp).

Service
  • Valves tested, sockets cleaned, solder joints and wiring checked.
  • Internal AC and B+ wiring checked for continuity and safety.  Mains fuse (T2A) installed inside chassis.
  • Mains lead and plug replaced with compliant shielded plug (required for electrical safety), installed with strain relief inside the chassis.
  • All pots and jacks cleaned and serviced, and front panel removed and cleaned.
  • Capacitors and other passives checked for value drift.  All electrolytics replaced. Several resistors replaced where values had drifted.
  • Vynex re-glued in cabinet to minimise risk of damage when removing/ replacing chassis.
  • Speaker socket and plug replaced.
  • New footswitch for tremolo installed , wired so that tremolo is off when disconnected.  The reverb circuit is such that it is completely off at its lowest setting.
  • Reverb tank, cable and connections all checked and resoldered as necessary
